One of the first things I wish to bring up here is the one which brought me into playing this game in the first place: the mystery-driven story. If you want to know what that something is, you can either start playing Sally Face on Steam or you can skip all of that and read through the wiki. Over time, Sal gets the support and help of his friends with his endeavors, with two boys named Larry and Todd especially helping him dive headfirst into the middle of it all, until…something happens. Throughout the game, Sal leads the charge in communicating with the different ghosts, looking into the different mysteries surrounding his new life at Addison Apartments, and uncovering local conspiracies. There’s not much I can discuss without potentially giving away parts of the story, but there are two things that I can safely say: 1) each episode begins with a disturbing dream sequence that the player must get through which helps set the tone of the game and introduces (or re-introduces) the player to how the game works, and 2) in the world of Sally Face, ghosts are real and usually do not wish to hurt Sal. Sally Face, is a boy with a prosthetic face who the audience sees grow up throughout the episodes, eventually catching up to the grown man we catch glimpses of every now and again telling other people the stories behind the different episodes that the audience is playing through. The different episodes each act as a way to build up the bigger overall mystery that is constantly being hinted at, which all seems like it will eventually culminate into the overarching story’s climax at the end (I admit, I haven’t managed to get all the way through Episode 4 yet). Sally Face is a game with (currently) 4 different playable episodes that each act as a way to “tell” about a major moment in the main character’s life. Here I will go over the game in more detail, then give my view on what makes this game great and what its developers could think on improving. There are many pros and cons to how Sally Face handles different things. However, I am not so fond of how the game handles certain technical details, especially with how it handles saving. I adore the in-game story, which is well thought out and still makes sense four playable episodes later. The main goal in this game is to explore your environment as much as possible to find all the clues you need to unlock new areas in the world and solve the mysteries surrounding the main character and his friends. Sally Face is a story-driven exploration game not unlike a classic point-and-click mystery solving game.
